Since writing this post I've determined that the only feasible way of using the device is by LAN only. Streaming media works fine, just transferring on and off take a lot of patience. I measured 4-5 MByte/s. A normal NAS should have a throughput of 30-60 MB. My recommendation: Stay away from the Lacie Networkspace and buy another solution.
