Although my posts lately have been few & far between, I have a good excuse!
I have been working on piecing together my portfolio and also working an identity package for myself. This has been a huge challenge for me. Together the business package includes logo, letterhead, business card and spiffy mailing envelope that fits it all comfortably inside. All of which will be put to the test when I mail off my design portfolio for my application to Emily Carr University.
Here is my latest revision…

I approached this task knowing 2 basic things about what I wanted to achieve in a mark for myself. 1 being simplicity, and 2 being my initials. The type I settled on is Century Gothic, a font inspired by 20th Century, but a bit more modern. I chose this font after analyzing my name and taking note of the big round letters. I sought after a font with consistent strokes and symmetrical circles in the lowercase o’s and d’s to match the dot in my mark. I considered finding a font that matched the C & J in the mark, but that was a dead-end.
I am looking for feedback regarding the placement of the type and COLORS! Colors are a tough challenge for me. I can go through hundreds of combinations that I like, and a few that I love, but settling on 1 or 2 has proven difficult. So folks, let me know what you would do, any comments are appretiated!

Love the type face and colors! Since you have a hard time trying to settle on colors.. why not, NOT settle. I think your logo design is solid enough that it can change colors to fit your mood, while still not reducing the recognizability of your branding.
Although, what would the logo look like if it were to come through in fax? You thinking to use empty squares with a thin stroke for the “J”? Or just stronger contrast in value?
In regards to text placement, I like what you have. I think if I had the working doc in front of me, I’d be tempted to push the text up to align with the center blocks of your icon — just to see. But I do think the bottom alignment works.
Nice work!
Thanks Brian,
I imagine the monochromatic uses will be a good excuse to just leave it all one solid color. I like the mark without the overbearing CJ too =D
I like your mark, but feel it might be overpowering the name a bit. I think the mark might look nice smaller and tucked above “jones”…
